When you visit Japan, a trip to the countryside allows you to see a different side of this island nation. Iwami region is far off the beaten track, but can be accessed by JR trains. A great souvenir, or activity with children, is to make your own pottery. Iwami is famous for its own brand of pottery, Iwami yaki, and you can even try your hand at making it yourself.

Yunotsu, on the main San'in JR train line, flourished as a place of production for pottery. A short walk from the station, you'll find "Yakimono Kan" (やきもの館 in Japanese), a pottery workshop and store. Outside Yakimono kan, you can see some traditional climbing kilns and you can also learn the history of Yunotsu yaki (or Yuntosu pottery)  in Japanese.
